The morning after...

The morning after Aria was sick, she seemed much better. She nibbled on some bananas and KIX cereal and it stayed down ok. Maybe she remembered all the KIX she got in utero (every morning I had to snack on some before I got out of bed to keep from feeling sick).

Last night she slept like a rock! I think we are in the clear now :-) That was one tramatic night!

so... that just happened...

I have seen puke - my own, my wife's, my friends', from DUIers, etc., and even my daughter when she was real young. But that last one was from milk or formula, and was really spit-up, not puke. tonight Aria hit another milestone and puked her half-digested dinner and almost completely digested lunch while sleeping. for the first time.

at roughly midnight, Dana woke to Aria crying. I was working in the basement, so i had no idea anything was happening until i hear Dana yelling my name at the top of her lungs. This is a frightening thing by itself because of all the stairs and halls that turn, you have to yell VERY loud in order to be heard all the way in the basement. Two thoughts quickly occur to me: "OMGwhatsWRONGshe'sgoingtowakeupAria!" and then - "OMGihopeAria'sOK!" So I freak out and run as fast as i can around the halls that turn, and up both flights of stairs skipping 2 steps at a time, to hear Aria screaming. I don't know what's going on so i frantically ask, and Dana says she's thrown up in bed. my idea of what this would look like (going by the last time she spit-up milk) paled in comparison to what the aftermath of her mouth explosion. we're talking Mama Cass ham sandwich-sized chunks (proportionate for a 16-month old of course). I could see pieces of chicken, and kidney beans? nope. raisins. bloated raisins. this kinda upset me because i thought she was chewing her food now. see "fun with food" post for more.

I was on cleanup duty. yay. There were diapers in the washing machine that needed to be hungup, and the pads put in the dryer before i could put the now dirty sheets, towel (because by now she had thrown up again), changing pad cover (that was also part of the second instance), and of course Aria's PJs. oh and i didn't think that putting someone's dinner in the washing machine would be a good idea, so i had to throw it in the trash down in the kitchen. I must remember to take that trash out before Dana gets to it in the morning...

All the while, we're discussing what we should do — should we call kaiser permanente, or wait it out? well after she puked that second time, we agreed to call and get some advice or what needs to be done. they have nurse practitioner call-backs, so we waited, calmed Aria, and I cleaned up the puke on the carpet (yes it left her crib too). Dana gave her a bath, which oddly enough, she hated. musta been tired and the whole stomach thing...

Kaiser calls back, and Aria pukes again. :-(
The nurse was very polite, and asked all kinds of standard dehydration questions, which Aria isn't so far, and other weird questions like "is it possible that she has got into a plant or other chemical that is poisonous?" a fair question, considering all the bleach and hemlock we got laying around/growing! or even "are you aware of any head injuries she may have sustained in the past couple of days?" ok...

but the nurse was helpful, we know that if this continues tomorrow after she eats breakfast and lunch, we need to head in.

So now we've got this info of basically get her back to sleep and don't give her water or food until the morning, but we still have a crying baby on our hands. which brings me to the next part that i'll babble about: ARIA DID NOT LIKE ME. she would ratchet up her screaming when Dana passed her off to me because her arms were sore. this hurt my feelings a lot. while i am not the momma, i kinda thought that she saw us as equals considering how much we both take care of her. it made me feel even more helpless. well, Dana worked it out, the wash finished and was dried, so Aria could have Doogan back. yep i forgot to mention. Doogan has something else to add to his list — puked on? check.

oh and I don't know if it's the smell of the trash in the kitchen or recapping all this, but i feel kinda sick to the stomach :-\ hopefully i don't have more to write about tomorrow. i am tired.

6 quirky things - part 2

Here are my six quirky things (to see the rules for this go to the post below):

  1. I have to reorganize things. One example is my closet. I have to go in about every three months or so and organize by style/color and also declutter by setting aside things for charity. I usually keep it pretty clean for some time after, but I think I (subconsciously) start to get really messy so I have a reason to REORGANIZE again. I love it! I also do this with places like our pantry, our computer area and now my daughter's closet/dresser. (I'll stop that one soon because that could get annoying to her...plus she might want to do it herself, hehe.) In my defense, we don't have a lot of storage space in our house so it does help to keep things under control.

  2. I have an obsession with making food and freezing it. I feel like this is probably a normal thing to do, but I think the enjoyment I get out of it is a little on the quirky side. I love to make soups and now my new favorite is pancakes for Aria. She currently has about 50 banana whole-wheat pancakes in the freezer :-) I did this one night after Aria went to bed this week. I was tired but I always have energy to make food for the freezer!

  3. I'm anti-collectible. This makes things interesting married to the collectible king. It gets even more interesting when I go through my reorganizing whirlwinds. He is getting better about it though, as he mentioned utilizing e-bay and only continuing to collect things that are small (like coins).

  4. I can't spell worth anything. This drives Kevin crazy because if he's ever within earshot, I will ask him how to spell words. It's usually words that I really have no excuse for not knowing how to spell.

  5. I am slightly afraid to drive Kevin's car (Volvo S60). We bought it July 2004 and I've only driven it three times (2 of which where in the last 6 months because I had to). I can't even explain this fear because his car is way nicer and safer than mine!

  6. I cry every time I get my haircut. I do have a lot of really thick, unevenly curly, potentially fuzzy hair, so can you blame me? It's traumatic when the hairdresser just starts chopping away and doesn't consider that every inch cut equals 3 inches gone when the curls shrink up! After a day or two my hair calms down and half the time I don't really have a problem with my cut. The other half, I cut my own hair to even things up or I start all over with a new hairdresser.

I'm tagging the ally and sammy show!

6 quirky things - part one?

Looks like i've been tagged! La Folle Maman notified me that I would be participating in the six quirky things meme. :-) this is labeled part one because it was suggested that i get my baby mommy to do list hers too. we shall see, we shall see...

Here are the rules:

1) Link to the person that tagged you.
2) Post the rules on your blog.
3) Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4) Tag at least 3 people at the end of your post and link to their blogs.
5) Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.
6) Let the fun begin!

here goes:

  1. I am a collector. if i find something i like, i tend to collect them and try to get the complete set. marketing execs know this about me and they make sure to number their wares so i know that i am missing something. eventually i tire of it, or feel i need to move on to the next thing, so i ebay em if it will sell.

I think the collector in me was dormant until mid high school when i noticed that the 2 Nine Inch Nails albums i had had a "halo 2" and "halo 5" marking on them. then i had to find out what and where the other halos where. turned out they were singles and remix albums. well, 17 years later and i have all 25 "halos" including several imports, and 1 DVD, and 1 BluRay even though i don't have a player yet. the grand total of Nine Inch Nails discs i have is 33. of one band. enough of that - I've collected comic books (still have about 400), DVDs (about 300), but have stopped because i was waiting for who would win the new format war (BluRay of course), Star Wars figures (had all the episode 1 figures that came out in 1999/2000), and US mint coins.

  2. I still play with Lego sets. Star Wars Lego sets to be exact. I have always liked Lego, it's the follow instructions and building models that i like. most kids like to combine all their Lego bricks and make up something else entirely. not me. i always had to keep the sets in their individual boxes, and i only liked building the sets. maybe that's another quirky thing, but it ties into this one so :-P. there was a Lego ad campaign in the late 80s about Zach the Lego maniac. that was my nickname in middle school.

the collector in me has made sure that i have the largest of the Star Wars sets - i have 9 sets that total over 15,000 pieces! they are very detailed and very time consuming to make, so i don't make them much anymore. there is one on Dana's desk right now that she's been wanting me to take apart but it takes a while to take apart as well. :-)

  3. If i like a book, or a movie, or a TV show, i read or watch it over and over again. yeah what's so quirky about that? I dunno, maybe it's the fact that i've read The Lord of the Rings about 10 times, and read it every year, sometimes twice a year. I've seen every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation at least 10 times. I can tell you what the episode is about, which season it was, and if there were any guest stars if you tell me the name of the episode, or if i see the opening scene. i've seen all the movies in my over 300 collection at least 5 times. the next one is a tie in to this, because if you've seen a lot of TV/movies...

  4. my useless knowledge of TV/movie stars can be annoying. we'll be watching a show or a movie, and i'll be saying "that's Diedrich Bader, he was in the Drew Carey show, but most people don't know he was in an episode of Star Trek, and no he wasn't a red shirt. i think he had 2 lines, it was the episode in season 2 (the worst season btw)..." My friends and family who know me well have learned to tune me out, i believe. I DON'T CARE CAUSE I KEEP TALKING ANYWAY!!!! :-)

  5. I like to cross-stitch. Dana bought me a cool program that lets you create your own patterns. I've got a very detailed one of our cat that i made and i'm still working on it after almost 3 years. :-\ I did make a ladybug one for Aria's room. and I have a Green Lantern (fave super hero from my comic collecting days) pattern just waiting so i feel cooler when i do cross stitch.

  6. I don't like needles very much, but i still give blood as often as possible. I can feel every molecule of that needle when it's sitting in my arm, and it's not a good feeling. it usually only takes just under 5 minutes to get a pint out of me, so i'm glad for that. :-) i don't get queezy or anything like that cause after being a po-po (a police) and seeing a live birth, i've seen a lot worse than getting stuck with a needle. keep things in perspective... yeah that's the ticket...
I am passing this along to Zeta-Baby, and Dana will have a blog to send to also. :-)

Don't you wish your baby could dance like me...

Couldn't pass up sharing this. She's got rhythm like her daddy :-)

jury duty... NOT

i've been notified of possible jury duty 3 times in my life, the first was when i was in college in NC, but it would have been in MD, so i had to be excused. The second was when i lived in Alexandria, and i never got a jury summons. And this time, i actually got a summons, but had to decline as i'm the primary care provider for my daughter. I've always wanted to be on a jury, but it just hasn't worked out so far. oh well...

Fun at the Park

It was a fairly nice day on Saturday, so we took Aria to a nearby park. it was her first time on a kiddie swing, and at first she didn't like it, so we played on the slides, and she loved those! after a while, I showed her how fun a swing can be (probably the most weight those things have seen in a long time). then we put her back in the kiddie swing, and she loved it! here's a clip of her giggling in the swing.
